Indrahar Pass Trek – A Journey Through the Dhauladhar Heartland

Where rugged ridges meet soulful skies — explore the untamed beauty of the Indrahar Pass with ShepherdTrail.

Introduction: The Call of the Dhauladhars

Nestled above the bustling town of McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh, the Indrahar Pass Trek is a spirited invitation to traverse the rugged spine of the Dhauladhar range. This trail is not just about reaching a snow-bound pass at 14,245 feet; it’s a walk through history, culture, and shifting landscapes that leave a lasting impression on every trekker’s soul.

Unlike some Himalayan trails that unfold over two weeks, the Indrahar Pass Trek compresses high drama into 4–5 days — making it perfect for those who want a genuine high-altitude adventure without an extended time commitment. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or stepping into the world of trekking with serious intent, Indrahar strikes a beautiful balance.

Why Indrahar Pass is a Must-Do for Trekkers

1. A Raw Himalayan Experience in Just a Few Days

Most Himalayan passes demand 7–10 days of trekking. Indrahar compresses the snowfields, granite walls, wind-torn ridges, and alpine meadows into a neat yet testing experience that’s ideal for ambitious beginners or time-crunched adventurers.

2. McLeod Ganj to Moon Peak — Spirituality to Solitude

The journey begins in McLeod Ganj, the spiritual epicentre of Tibetan Buddhism in India. It takes you deep into the wilderness where all that remains is the sound of your boots crunching on moraine and wind howling over the ridges.

3. Panoramic Drama

The moment you cross the Indrahar ridge, the view explodes into the vast Ravi valley on one side and the Kangra plains on the other. On a clear day, Pir Panjal ranges play hide-and-seek in the background.

4. Seasonal Variations

From May to October, this trail transforms beautifully. In early months, you’ll trudge through snow. By September–October, shepherds descend, and the route becomes drier but equally dramatic.

Detailed Itinerary for Indrahar Pass Trek

Day 1: McLeod Ganj to Triund (2,875 m)

  • Distance: 9 km

  • Time: 4–5 hours

  • Trail Type: Gradual incline through mixed forest

Kick off the trek from McLeod Ganj’s Gallu Devi temple. The trail weaves through oak and rhododendron trees, with teasing glimpses of Kangra Valley on your left. After crossing the Magic View Café, you’ll soon reach the iconic Triund meadow. The sunset here is a painting in motion.

Day 2: Triund to Laka Got (3,300 m) via Snowline Café

  • Distance: 5 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Trail Type: Short but steeper, rocky section

After breakfast, ascend towards the Snowline Café. Beyond this point, the forest recedes, replaced by rocky terrain and dwarf juniper. Laka Got, often mistaken as Lahesh Cave camp, is a small grazing field frequently visited by Gaddis (local shepherds). You may spot their makeshift stone shelters.

This is the heart of the trek. Begin pre-dawn to avoid harsh weather near the pass. The ascent is steep and at times exposed. You’ll pass Lahesh Cave, a natural rock shelter, before navigating zigzagging paths and patches of lingering snow.
